We have Podgelets!

Podge went into labour just after midnight, and gave birth to the last pup at about 7 a.m. this morning. We have five healthy cocker spaniel pups, three boys and two girls. Podge is fine, and a natural mom.

When not feeding or asleep, the pups make a constant humming-squeaking noise. They feed and sleep lined up in a row.

The delivery, though long, was fairly uneventful. All but one of the pups are black. The liver and white girl was the last pup to arrive and came out backwards. Coming in last and arse first? I think that's the pup destined for our kennel.

Ermahgerd! Those are so ludicrously cute! And you of course have to keep the outlier for your Land of Misfit Dogs. Incidentally, what color was Podge's paramour? Do you think any of the ones that look black now will lighten to Podge brown? (maybe they're just still gooey?)
Congratulations on five healthy pups. Looking forward to more pics soon!

Oh so cute! More pictures please! :)

I love that there is a little white one different from all the rest, but they are all cute.

Puppies! So cute!

I'm glad to hear the delivery was uneventful, and may Dulcie be your last vet trip for a while!

Father was black with patches of white, seems to be the dominant colour. I have no idea where the white one came from. I will post more pictures when Podge is settled, and a video of the weird noises puppies make - reminds me of a theremin!

OF / Anon - I'm going to have to ask cocker breeders aout tha white colour, seems more like a springer! But we're all so glad mom and babies all doing well.

OaWaW - oh, we're already booked into the vets at lunch tomorrow for a puppy check and to have their tails docked for work. Vet does it under special license, but it has to be in the first 36 hours from birth.

Podgelets! Yay! Hurrray!! Good on that girl for powering through her first delivery. Good on you for being cogent after a long night. Is the special/chosen one a male or I think you should have a naming contest. I vote for Gringo/Gringa. Congratulations Jen and Podge! (And Mike)

Podgelets really is the perfect word for them at this stage.

We had a white cocker with black spots while I was growing up. They called it "parti color". The mom was black.

Congratualtions!

Congratulations to Mum and Midwife :} Are Pip and Dakota still in attendance?

At what point do we start thinking of a name for Little Miss "out last, bum first" ?

Last but not least, how is Dulcie today?

Adorable! congrats to Podge, and very glad all went well.

PS I've been meaning to get back to you on the cultural/other suggestions for your Spanish holiday. You said you were going to Can Jou and you couldn't even find it on a map - I'm afraid I don't know it, but I put it into google maps and it reckons it's not that far from where I grew up....(near Figueres).
If it *is* within striking distance of Figueres, then it's kind of compulsory for you to go to the Dali museum, if you haven't already been. If you manage to go to Figueres on a Thursday morning, you get to see the market as well, which if you're into markets you might enjoy walking around.
If you can make it to the coast, the coast south of Llanca is really nice. Or, the coast near la Escala, at Sant Marti d'Empuries, is great. St Marti d'Empuries also has bonus roman ruins which you can visit - very interesting.
As to Barcelona - I haven't actually ever lived there, but my sister does, and I've visited. I recommend eating at Can Culleretes http://www.culleretes.com for proper / real Catalan food. I've recommended it to both English and American friends before and everyone loves it (I do too). PS don't let the dark exterior put you off! Stuff to do in Barcelona: limitless. Walk around the port, go see some of the Gaudi buildings - go to the Park Guell (has funny tile mosaic benches and sculptures by Gaudi). Oh something which I love is the funicular (cable car) which goes up Montjuic mountain - the best view of Barcelona!
Okay, now I'm jealous of your trip :-) all the best to Podge and the Podgelets.

Aww! Congratulations to you and Podge :-)

Pip and Dakota would like to visit more but Podge curls around her pups when they do, so I took that as a sign that Podge wants her space. For now anyway.

Mike is trying to name the new pup Fraggle. I think it's a horrible name, so all suggestions welcome!

And Dulcie is back to her normal, non-swollen, self.

Sara - I looked up the colour too and you're right, our liver and white girl is called particoloured. Seems she'll get more flecks of brown in her coat as she gets older.

We have all bitches in our kennels so it will be a girl, most likely the white one. I like Gringa. If Spud ever has flatcoat puppies I was going to call the one I kept Loca, as I expect she'll take after her mother!

I'm doing a lot of staring at and sniffing puppies. You may have to stage an intervention!

Maria - Thank you so much for the travel info. It is a stone's throw from Figueres and I would LOVE the Dali Museum. Didn't realise it was there. Will make special effort to get to the restaurant too. Barcelona gives me more oppotunity for sightseeing, as the ride in Can Jou is 8 hours in the saddle, in the mountains, between camps. I'll just be glad of fresh water and a hot meal at dusk!
