The Dogs Know What Time it is

We don't exactly run a tight ship here. If you've read any of my previous posts, you probably guessed that already. But, when it comes to feeding the animals, I do my best to keep to a schedule. Animals like routine and structure especially at meal times. Hence, "The Song" -

Third verse, same as the first.

The grace period is from sunrise until about 8.30am, but after that I get this reminder. And I always respond. Essentially they have me trained.

Those dogs definitely know what time it is.

You get until 8:30?!? If something doesn't show up in the food bowls before 7:30, my crew does the stumpy dance and the heavy sigh chorus until breakfast arrives.

Ahhh yes,..the heavy sigh chorus. Accompanied with longing stares? I would love to see the stumpy dance, which I'm sure is very entertaining.

Cats on the other hand have absolutely no sense of time other than now. As in, my food bowl is empty, I don't care if it is 3 am and you're asleep, it must be filled now!

CallieK - I know nothing about cats so it's always good to hear from cat owners. A 3am wake up call would make them unpopular in our house for sure!

Love it. If I don't get food by 8:30 my husband would probably say that I make similar sounds.

We have lurchers, so they tend to just start following me about the house, alternating with running back to check nothing has miraculously appeared in their bowls and just standing RIGHT behind me, rather than making a noise.

The ducks on the other hand, set up a crescendo until I go to see what the problem is. (Their food hopper is missing a screw and is a bit temperamental, sometimes not dispensing pellets into the dish). They have me well trained. (But I have got them to go in at night if I shout 'bed!' at them. Evens, I think!)

My Heinz-57-with-a-side-order-of-whippet will do this at any time I'm not carrying out whatever task she feels is appropriate for the moment.

Last night it was bedtime ... normally we go into the garden for a night-time pee, then in for a couple of biscuits and straight to bed. Unfortunately for her, husband and I decided to sit at the kitchen table to plan the Christmas menus - Daisy got extremely upset that I was in the wrong room and shouted at me until I did as I was told ... bless her :}

Pam - If only we could train our dogs (or husbands) to respond to our own cries of hunger!

Hazel - Of course, the 'Miracle of the magically appearing breakfast'. That made me laugh. We don't have ducks but I understand they can get quite vociferous at any perceived slight. Sending them to bed on a command is no mean feat!

BW - with a side order of whippet....love it. I think we inadvertently train our animals just by sticking to a routine, funny when we get picked up on it by our pets.

Just to say Good Luck with the move. Please 'blog' again when you can, I'm sure I am not alone in wanting to know how you and the animals settle in your/their new home! I may not comment often, but do enjoy reading your musings of a life so very different from mine!! All the best!
